Whether you’re a regular smoothie who knows the difference between a hot wax and strip wax, or a waxing virgin looking for a little more info before taking the plunge, we have you covered. Here at the RMUK salon in Leeds we provide the perfect hair removal service for you, making sure you feel comfortable and relaxed with the whole process. From wax comparisons and before & aftercare, to hair removal alternatives and individual treatments available for men and women… Here is your ultimate RMUK Hair Removal Guide explaining everything you need to know.
So let’s start off with the difference between hot and strip waxing. It’s all about the sensitivity of the skin…
Hot Wax is used for more sensitive small areas such as eyebrows, underarms and the bikini area. It’s great for stubborn and shorter hairs. The Hot Wax we use doesn’t leave a sticky residue – hoorah! Due to the high temperature the pores open more, which means easier hair removal, not to mention less hair breakage meaning stay smooth for longer, and less chance of ingrowing hairs.
The superior quality, smooth and creamy wax we use soothes and calms the skin. The special formula reduces discomfort and leaves the skin satin smooth.
When our therapists use hot wax on sensitive areas they will first apply an oil to the skin which acts as a barrier between the wax and the skin. Therefore, the wax is able to shrink wrap around the hair and will not stick to the skin. The wax is spread thickly onto the skin and allowed to dry slightly before gently peeled away. Good news – this method is far less painful than most!
Strip Wax
is recommended for thicker, less sensitive skin for example legs, arms, chest and shoulders. A thin layer of wax is applied to the skin and is then removed using a paper strip.
It is advised that your hair should be about ½ cm long. If you have been waxing leave it to grow for about 4-5 weeks. If you have been shaving leave it to grow for 2 weeks. Please do not trim before your appointment as you may trim the hair too short.
Everyone has different pain thresholds so your experience may be different to someone else. If you have waxing done on a regular basis (every 4-5 weeks) you will find it becomes easier as your hairs will thin and become sparse.
Important : Regardless of the area(s) being waxed, there’s no need to feel embarrassed! Our professional beauty therapists provide these treatments on a daily basis and are naturally skilled and friendly individuals, we promise there is nothing to worry about!
The benefits of professional waxing include:
Before your Wax
. Please ensure your hair is long enough to remove completely from the roots – it should be at least 0.5 centimetres. Shaved the area? Please leave about 2 weeks
growth up to your appointment. If you regularly shave the area it might take a couple of waxes to get your hair into a cycle of growth that allows the most effective wax finish.
If you are concerned about the pain, or haven’t had waxing before then take 1 or 2 paracetamol about 30-40 minutes before your appointment. (Please check with your Doctor if you are unsure whether you can take paracetamol)
After your Wax . It’s normal immediately after your wax for a little bit of redness and a prickly heat type rash to appear. This should disappear after a few hours. Because waxing removes the hair at the root, it’s important that you keep the area clean and bacteria free.
This means:
As you skin closes over the follicles, the next consideration is to ensure you prevent ingrown hairs. Gently exfoliate your skin twice a week, be careful not to be too hard scrubbing. Using a Dermalogica Buffing Cloth
is perfect to use in the bath or shower. Moisturise everyday to keep skin soft and help the new hairs grow through properly.
And the bonus for following all of the aftercare tips? An easier wax next time around!
Regular waxing will leave the area hair free for 3 – 6 weeks. Over time the density of hair in the waxed area will start to decrease too.
Strip Wax
Hot Wax
Shaving blunts the hair off, but waxing removes it from the root, guaranteeing smoothness for longer. So basically guys, the more you wax, the less hair removal you will need to do! We have seen an increase of men visiting the salon for waxing treatments, so don’t be shy – save yourself time with a wax at RMUK.

As part of a full consultation we establish all possible types. Under some circumstances we do not recommend treatments, for example; pregnancy, epilepsy and other certain medical conditions, we would always advise if we think your doctor has to be consulted.
